Lakota Winter Count

Rational:
Often our understanding of Native American peoples has been shaped by the media. In movies, commercials, and sport team mascots non-native people are often responsible for representing Native American Culture. The result has been misrepresentation, misunderstanding, and romaticizing. In this asignment we will look at the history of the Lakota people and one of their making traditions from a Native American perspective. We will use what we learn about the tradition of a winter count to inform our project and not to attempt to copy it.

• Student will be able to describe the artistic vision of the Lakota image makers.
• Student will be able to recognize a Wintercount, the pictograms contained within, and how they were used.
• Student will be able to explain how the Lakota ended up residing in Minnesota.
• Student will be able to summarize the significance and use of the Wintercount in Lakota society.
PROCESS
OBJECTIVES:
Student will be able to understand the basic principles of symetry.
Student will be able to create simple pictograms or icons to represent larger ideas.
Student will be able to create unity.
Student will be able to compose a well balanced composition.
