Expressionist Self Portrait
Category: Summative
Rational:
The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself. -Friedrich Nietzsche
Going against the grain isn't the easiest thing to do in a culture set up to support uniformity. Often those who innovate are shunned or even criminalized. Examples of this today might be; stem cell research, cloning, or the creation of transgenetic species. Paradoxically our society counts on innovation and unique perspectives for growth and development. Often we hear people say 'think out side the box'. To be able to build the skills to do this type of ground breaking, original thinking students need to be creative within (if you will) a box. Constraints help focus creative problem solving skills.
