RATIONAL:
In art meaning is created in many ways. Often living things, colors, and objects are used in imagery take on other "symbolic" meanings. We call this process symbolism. Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities. We will be looking at the development of achievements or the coat of arms (as they are commonly known) in medieval Europe. We will discuss the tradition and how it influences our culture today.
OBJECTIVES:
• Students will create a personal crest or coat of arms.
• Students will apply the drawing of basic forms to aide in constructing complex forms.
• Students will use color, shape, and imagery in symbolic way.
• Students will construct balanced compositions using the principles of symmetry.
